Plaster Mold Making Workshop (Weekend #1)
Plaster Mold Making Workshop (Weekend #1)
WEEKEND #1
Saturday February 22 from 10am-5pm & Sunday Feb 23 10am-4pm
618 Arlington St, Winnipeg, Mb
$325 + GST (includes all materials)
In this two day intensive workshop, Rachael Kroeker will lead you through the multi-step process of making a single drop out mold as well as a multi piece plaster mold. This process will allow you to replicate forms with consistent results in a vast range of forms. Rachael will teach you the basic techniques needed to integrate mold making into your ceramic practice, along with some tips and tricks she has learned over the last 13+ years she has been making them.
This workshop will cover:
Overview of slip casting molds - drop out, multi piece (2, 3, and 4) as well as the tools needed to make them.
Undercuts and seemlines - what to look for and potential design considerations.
Finding/making a model and how to prepare it.
How to measure and pour plaster with success.
How to make a one piece drop out mold.
How to make a 2 or 3 piece mold
How to make multiple molds of the same form
Trouble shooting and a document with step by step instructions, so you can continuing making molds in your own studio
*Do to time constraints this workshop will only cover the mold making process, not the actual slip casting itself. A brief demo on slip casting will be given on Sunday, but no casting will be done by participants as the molds will be too wet. If there is enough interest, an additional one day workshop devoted to slip casting can potentially be organized.
What to Bring:
Participants will need to bring a minimum of 2 models to the workshop, either found objects or leather hard pieces that have been hand built or thrown on the wheel. For the one piece drop out mold, participants are encouraged to bring a small cup or bowl with no undercuts. The second model can be of your choosing. Some examples: glass bottle, small glass vase, clay handle for a mug, small clay sculpture, thrifted figurine/ toy, wheel thrown piece with undercuts. All models need to be approved prior to class to ensure you are bringing both a drop out and multi piece model. ( I will send out an email explaining the different model types with examples which will help with the selection/ creation prior to the workshop).
Please bring an apron and/or clothes you can get plaster on, along with a water bottle and lunch.
Please note:
My studio space is small, so I have capped this workshop at 6 people. This intimate learning experience will give you ample time to ask questions and receive guidance.
This is an intermediate workshop. While it is open to any and all skill levels, I highly recommend a working knowledge of clay.
If the class does not reach the minimum number of participants (4 people) a full refund will be given. If you need to cancel, a full refund - 5% process fees will be given until Jan 31st.
